WASHINGTON, March 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced this afternoon that the Obama Administration would not proceed with a proposal that could have forced veterans to use their private insurance to pay for the treatment of combat-related injuries.

Pelosi made the announcement at a meeting she and House Democrats hosted this afternoon in the Capitol with leaders of veterans' service organizations, who greeted the news with a standing ovation. Below are the Speaker's remarks.

"Good afternoon and thank you all very much for coming. Thank you for your leadership, for your service to our country, for your generosity of spirit to America's heroes, for helping us make better policy to honor the service and sacrifice of our men and women in uniform, both when they are in active duty and when they come home. As you know, in the military, the expression is: 'On the battlefield, we leave no soldier behind.' And when they come home, working with you, we will leave no veteran behind.

"Particular to today's meeting and a subject of some conversation, I'm pleased to announce that we have some good news. Over the past several days, President Obama has listened to the genuine concerns expressed by veterans' leaders and veterans' service organizations regarding the option of billing service connected to veterans' insurance companies.

"Based on the respect that President Obama has for our nation's veterans and the principled concerns expressed by veterans' leaders, the President has made the decision that the combat-wounded veterans should not be billed through their insurance policies for combat-related injuries. [Applause.]

"I want to thank all of you, our friends came to me from the American Legion and many of you expressed your views on this subject. You had a great champion, of course, in Chet Edwards, who is Chairman of the Appropriations Subcommittee on veterans; the Chairman of the Veterans Affairs Committee, Bob Filner; the Chairman of the Armed Services Committee, Mr. Skelton, who is here; and the man who writes the budget, and he was never going to put this in the budget, I know, John Spratt.

"I want to thank them and you for making this important change. But it wasn't just the Chairmen inside the Congress, it was our Members as well. Mr. Brad Ellsworth is here, John Hall, Tim Walz, Jim Marshall, Glenn Nye, Vic Snyder; they and so many other Members, Gene Taylor. They and many members of the Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs Committees and Mr. Edwards, Appropriations Committee on Veterans Issues worked hard to make this clear so that this issue is now behind us.

"We have important work to do. Because of you, we have been able to have the biggest increases in veterans' benefits in the history of the VA. We did that a couple years ago as soon as we took the majority. And last year, we even did one better and now, working together under the leadership of President Obama, in the budget we have even more dramatic increases to meet the needs of America's heroes.

"So thank you all for the role that you are playing in this, and we look forward to this discussion today. Thank you all very much for joining us."

  1. I said it in the other discussion area but I will repeat it:

We have troops OF ALL RACES who served their country, often in awful war zones that left them scarred and maimed, and they did so with the assumption that medical care would be one of the benefits they’d receive as compensation. The Obama Administration has no business trying to opt out of that.

They performed a duty for their country and they are owed certain things.

What is perhaps the most odious part of all of this is the fact that even as Obama tries to cut costs by stiffing veterans he’s spending billions on bailouts to corporate executives and mortgage payoffs to irresponsible citizens.

    Hope and change!

  2. I am offended that they would even CONSIDER such a proposal. Wether you are White, Black, Democrat, or Republican--it's damn insulting.

That's mighty white of you Mr. Obama...but at least we know your true feelings towards our soldiers/veterans before you recinded this idea.

I want to thank the more ADULT Democrat members of Congress and the Senate that put the breaks on the CHILDREN that seem to make up the executive.

  4. Oh do grow the fuck up. I am a vet and I am not offended by it. They didn't do it. Get over it. I am a vet and eligible to go to the VA. I do not. I have private medical and don't like to wait in lines. Not that big an Obama fan but am glad that they are looking into cutting cost and government over runs. Bush damn sure didn't.

  5. Nikki,

It's kind of weird that the same crowd that is against a Government controlled medical system is sure in favor of a Government controlled system when it comes to the military.

  6. And Schwartz I could say the only time Obama advocates the private sector is in dealing with the veterans medical needs.

This is how I see it: I guy gets shot up doing our nations bidding...that combat injury should be taken care of regardless of the cost.

In my mind everything else takes a back seat to that.

  8. I could think of thousands of things the government could cut before cutting medical coverage for guys and gals with combat related injuries.

How about cutting that program (just put in the porkbill) to study pig farts? Jesus, don't talk to me Mr. Miller about cuts of the VA before bs like that is addressed first.

    Go fuck yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Anonymous,

The Government should pay for any injuries that a soldier receives in action, no question, for life.

But would the private insurance being repaid by the government give them better care?? That's a tough question to answer. The VA sucks in a lot of areas. The staff is underpaid and the VA hospitals are often full.

But I do see your point about the hypocrisy of democrats also. How they reverse roles when it comes to things like the military.

  10. """Mr. Schwartz said...But would the private insurance being repaid by the government give them better care?? That's a tough question to answer. The VA sucks in a lot of areas. The staff is underpaid and the VA hospitals are often full."""

We all know what private insurance does to people. They deny treatment and weasel their way out of not paying for as much as they can get away with. They also jack up insurance premiums to those who have a health problems. This can make an employer think twice about hiring them as everyones premium will go up.

Therefore, the private insurance system sucks and those guys who put their life's on the line for our country will pay dearly if pushed over to the private sector.

Obama is heartless to even publicly consider something like this.

He is definitely starting to show who he really is.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Hooch whining about Obama, wow that is something new. You've long ago shown who you really are, Hooch. A ignormous without a clue. The Obama administration is trying to cut cost, something that the GOP didn't do under Bush. The only thing Bush was good for was tanking the economy.

    Nikki,

I don't know what is compelling me to write you this, but I want you to know that I am no longer working in or for the so-called nationalist community--haven't been for some time (With the help of God I slowly edged my way out of it). I have always been accused of not ever really being part of it, and maybe they were right. Does this mean I will be joining your side or appearing on Oprah Winfrey?--I think you know the answer to that one.

I am a human being and have made mistakes...but what really made me "see the light" was my so-called comrades in the struggle...I don't think I need to explain further why on that score since you chronicled a good portion of it.

I am not a hateful person and I am not a monster...I do regret any hurt I may have caused individuals with my words, but I don't apologize for castigating and putting up to ridicule those elements that make living in our society a living Hell on Earth.

I want to live in peace with what is left of the rest of my life.

    Sincerely,
    Blevins

ps. Don't write me back asking questions because I won't answer them. I think the above note speaks for itself.

  13. Belvins would have emailed a note like this. I don't think he would publish it publicly for everyone to see.

  14. Shocking, Obama making fun of his bowling comparing it to something you would see at the Special Olympics.

He sure did smack those handicapped kids back into place by his jokes on them. Way to go Obama! They deserved the shot at them anyways so don't feel bad about it.

That was real funny. What do you beading heart liberals think about that? I would guess that you would be with me on this one. Obama is a heartless self absorbed individual.

I am going to start showing you liberals the true Obama. I will slowly break down his character so you can see him for who he really is. I will do it in a manor that is straight out of his mouth so you can't deny it. Maybe you will come to see that he actually doesn't walk on water and in reality he is one of the slickest politicians to ever become president.
