SAN FRANCISCO
N.J. man sought in Wiesel attack

Saturday, February 17, 2007

An arrest warrant was issued Friday for a New Jersey man accused of cornering and trying to kidnap Holocaust author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel in a San Francisco hotel elevator Feb. 1.

San Francisco police say 22-year-old Eric Hunt of Sussex County, New Jersey, confronted the 78-year-old Wiesel in an elevator at the Argent Hotel and pulled him out on the sixth floor before Wiesel began screaming. A man identifying himself as Hunt later wrote in an online posting that he wanted to force Wiesel to deny that the Holocaust happened.

Hunt is being sought on a $500,000 arrest warrant on charges of attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder abuse, stalking, battery and the commission of a hate crime.

Police said they had found Hunt's car in the hotel's parking garage.

Wiesel, in an interview this week with The Chronicle, said his assailant had fled so quickly that he left his wallet and driver's license in his car.

Wiesel had come to San Francisco for an interfaith conference called "Facing Violence: Justice, Religion and Conflict Resolution."

On Feb. 6, a man named Eric Hunt posted a detailed account of the attack on several anti-Semitic and anti-Israel Web sites. Hunt's account matched a description of the attack released by police days later.

Hunt said on the Web site that he had cornered Wiesel, the author of more than 40 books based on his Holocaust experiences, to admit that the Holocaust had never happened.

"I was convinced that if he took me to his room, he would do me harm," Wiesel, a survivor of the Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camps, said in the interview. "Since 1945, I've never felt so threatened."

The father of a 22-year-old Eric Hunt from Sussex County said his son, whom he had not seen in 11 years, called Feb. 9 and asked to be picked up from a bus station in Scranton, Pa., explaining that his car was in the shop. San Francisco police refused to confirm whether the man was the Eric Hunt they are looking for.

Frank Hunt, 49, who lives in Archbald, Pa., said his son had been acting strangely.

"He was kind of disheveled-looking," he said. "He's got no bag with him, no toothpaste or underwear. He was constantly pacing."

His son mentioned nothing about Wiesel, the Holocaust or anti-Semitism in the two days he stayed with him, Frank Hunt said.

"I hope there's nothing wrong with him," he said. "It's the last thing I want, after not seeing your own son for so many years."

He said his son ate only four McDonald's chicken nuggets from that Friday afternoon until Sunday morning, when he drove him to Sussex. His son asked to be dropped 5 miles from an uncle's house and said he would walk the rest of the way in 9-degree weather, Frank Hunt said.

"It just seemed to me that there was something deep, deep, deep going on," said Frank Hunt, a prison guard. "I really have been worried about him." He said San Francisco police have not called him.

"I gave him $150 in an envelope with a note," Frank Hunt said. The note read, "I hope we can see you."

  1. So...a 22 year old son who the father hasn't seen in 11 years (would make him a child the last time seen) is "acting strangely?" How would Dad know that?

  2. Sounds like Eric has developed a taste for methamphetamine.
4 chicken nuggets over the weekend points to energy coming from the miracle of chemistry.

Steve Holsten should be able to tell us more about the chickens "nuggets". He has hands on experience with numerous chickens.

  3. I wish to add that the "Eric Hunt" who has been posting here isn't the same person who they are looking for.

(02-17) 13:09 PST SAN FRANCISCO -- The man accused of trying to kidnap Holocaust author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Elie Wiesel outside a San Francisco hotel earlier this month was arrested today in New Jersey.

Montgomery Township police confirmed that 22-year-old Eric Hunt was arrested at 10:30 a.m. PST. He faces charges of attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder abuse, stalking, battery and the commission of a hate crime.

San Francisco police say Hunt confronted Wiesel, 78, in an elevator at the Argent Hotel on Feb. 1 during an interfaith conference and pulled him out on the sixth floor. MONTGOMERY: Wiesel assault suspect arrested at Carrier Clinic

MONTGOMERY -- A Sussex County man charged with assaulting and attempting to kidnap Nobel Laureate and Holocaust scholar Elie Wiesel was arrested Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Clinic.

Eric Hunt, 22, of Sussex, was arrested on a fugitive warrant from California at about 1:30 p.m. by officers from the Montgomery Township Police Department and the Someset County Prosecutor's Office Fugitive Task Force.

Hunt faces charges that include attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder
abuse, stalking, battery and the commission of a hate crime, according to San Francisco police.

Wiesel, 78, was a featured speaker at a Feb. 1 peace forum at the Argent Hotel in San Francisco. He was approached in the lobby by a white man in his 20s who asked for an interview, police said.

Wiesel agreed to talk in the lobby, but the man insisted the interview be conducted in a hotel room, and got into the elevator with Wiesel. Once on the sixth floor, the suspect dragged Wiesel from the elevator. Wiesel began yelling, and the suspect ran away down the elevator, police said.

The arrest was made without incident. New Jersey authorities had been contacted by San Francisco police who provided information on Hunt's whereabouts.

Hunt was lodged in the Somerset County Jail, in lieu of $500,000 bail, awaiting extradition to California.

Carrier Clinics are a psychiatric and substance abuse treatment center.

Suspect arrested in attack on Elie Wiesel
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- A man suspected of attacking Holocaust chronicler Elie Wiesel in a San Francisco hotel was arrested Saturday in New Jersey.

Eric Hunt was picked up by local police at his father's house in Montgomery, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. He faces a long list of charges in California, including attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder abuse, stalking, battery and the commission of a hate crime.

Wiesel told police that a man confronted him in an elevator at the Argent Hotel on Feb. 1, saying he wanted to interview him. Wiesel said that he agreed to talk in the lobby but began screaming when the man tried to force him out of the elevator and into a hotel room.

Hunt, or someone using his name, posted an account of the assault on neo-Nazi Web sites. He said he wanted to convince Wiesel, a Nobel Prize laureate, Holocaust survivor and author of more than 40 books, to admit that mass killings of Jews did not occur.

Police found Hunt's car in the parking garage at the Argent.

Man, 22, arrested in N.J. in Wiesel attack
Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer

    Saturday, February 17, 2007

(02-17) 17:53 PST -- A New Jersey man charged Saturday with attacking Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel at a San Francisco Hotel earlier this month was a "lone wolf" who had also stalked the Nobel laureate in Florida, authorities said.

Police found 22-year-old Eric Hunt at a mental health treatment center in Belle Mead, N.J., where he had sought treatment within the past week for undisclosed reasons. He remained jailed Saturday night in Summerville, N.J.

Hunt faces charges of attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder abuse, stalking, battery and committing a hate crime. San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris pledged to vigorously prosecute what she called, "horrible, outrageous crimes" by "someone who traveled here" to target Wiesel on Feb. 1.

Investigators say Hunt confronted Wiesel, 78, in an elevator at the Argent Hotel during an interfaith conference and pulled him out on the sixth floor. The assailant fled when Wiesel began screaming. Police said they found Hunt's car in the hotel's parking garage, and Wiesel told The Chronicle that his assailant fled so quickly that the assailant left his wallet and driver's license in the car.

A judge issued a warrant for Hunt's arrest Friday. San Francisco police knew Hunt had cash and was using a credit card, and they tracked him to the Carrier Clinic in Belle Mead. Hunt's mother had helped him check into the facility, which is about 60 miles from his home, investigators said. San Francisco police alerted their counterparts in Montgomery Township; they arrested Hunt on Saturday afternoon.

"He had admitted himself there for some type of treatment,'' Montgomery Township police Sgt. Guy Fillebrown said. "He was very polite, docile, there was no resistance,'' he added. "We simply transported him to jail.''

Hunt is a Holocaust denier who in recent weeks traveled to Florida in an unsuccessful attempt to confront Wiesel at a conference there, said Lt. Dan Mahoney, head of special investigations for San Francisco police. Hunt began following Holocaust denial organizations after graduating from college, and although he used the Internet to spread his beliefs, authorities believe Hunt acted alone.

"He appears to be what we call a lone wolf,'' Mahoney said.

Five days after Wiesel was attacked, a man identifying himself as Hunt posted a detailed account of the crime on several anti-Semitic and anti-Israel Web sites. That account matched a description of the attack police provided a few days later. In the online post, Hunt said he cornered Wiesel, the author of more than 40 books based on his Holocaust experiences, to force him into admitting that the Holocaust never occurred.

Hunt's father, Frank Hunt, 49, said his son called Feb. 9 and asked to be picked up at a bus station in Scranton, Pa., explaining that his car was in the shop. The elder Hunt said his son, whom he had not seen in 11 years, acted strangely, appeared disheveled and did not carry luggage.

His son mentioned nothing about Wiesel, the Holocaust or anti-Semitism in the two days he stayed with him in Pennsylvania, Frank Hunt said. The elder Hunt, who dropped his son off on Feb. 11 in New Jersey at his insistence, said he hopes his son gets the help he needs.

"I think he might be mentally ill,'' he said. "I'm worried about his mental health.''

Hunt is to appear in court in Summerset County, N.J. on Tuesday.

    Police: Wiesel attacker jailed
    Sunday, February 18, 2007
    BY BRENDAN BERLS
    Star-Ledger Staff
A Sussex County man who authorities say attacked Nobel peace laureate Elie Wiesel in San Francisco earlier this month and then fled back to New Jersey was arrested yesterday on several charges, including committing a hate crime.
Friends and former acquaintances of Eric Hunt, 22, of Vernon struggled to reconcile the friendly, bright, articulate young man they remembered with the Holocaust denier, attempted kidnapper and possible Neo-Nazi authorities say he has become.
"I'm stupefied," said Mary Ann Kaicher, who coached Hunt on the debate team at Vernon High School, which he graduated in 2002.
"He was a lovely kid. Very bright, very idealistic," Kaicher said, reacting with shock to the news that Hunt had been charged in the Feb. 1 attack on Wiesel. "He must have gotten in with some crazy people or had a breakdown or something."
Yesterday afternoon, a day after being named by the San Francisco police, Hunt was arrested at the Carrier Clinic, a substance-abuse rehabilitation center in Montgomery Township, Somerset County Prosecutor Wayne Forrest said. He is being held on a fugitive warrant pending extradition to California.
"This was a brutal assault on a man who's dedicated his life to peace," District Attorney Kamala Harris said. "He was viciously attacked for who he is, and we won't stand for that."
San Francisco police Lt. Dan Mahoney said he doesn't believe Hunt belonged to a larger organization, and that the recent college graduate paid for his trip to San Francisco himself.
"He is a lone wolf and not part of an organization or group," Mahoney said.
Forrest said he was called Friday night by Sussex County Prosecutor David Weaver about the case. San Francisco police, working with New York City police, had developed information that Hunt may have been at the clinic and asked Forrest to follow up on it. The 1:30 p.m. arrest happened without incident, Forrest said.
Police say Hunt accosted Wiesel in an elevator at the Argent Hotel, where the author and Holocaust survivor was a featured guest at a conference on violence. Hunt allegedly insisted that Wiesel accompany him to his room on the sixth floor for an interview. At the sixth floor, Hunt dragged the 78-year-old out of the elevator and down the hallway. He fled after Wiesel began yelling for help.
On Feb. 6, a posting on an anti-Semitic Web site by someone identifying himself as Hunt took credit for the attack. The author said he had been tailing Wiesel for weeks, and wanted him to admit his most famous book, "Night," a harrowing memoir of his experiences as a teenager in the Nazi death camps, was made up.
"I had planned on ... getting Wiesel into my custody, with a cornered Wiesel finally forced to state the truth on videotape ... exposing the 'Pope of the Holocaust religion' for being nothing but a genocidal liar," read the posting.
San Francisco police said they identified Hunt through a vehicle that was left in the hotel garage. Hunt is charged with attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, elder abuse, stalking, battery, and committing a hate crime, police said.
Kaicher's reaction to the charges was in line with those of several other teachers and coaches who recalled Hunt as a nice, taciturn teenager who also was an editor for the school newspaper and star singles player on the varsity tennis team.
"He certainly didn't seem like the hating type," said Marc Bray, Hunt's journalism teacher. Bray said he wrote a college recommendation letter for Hunt in which he praised his work for the school paper, which included articles on Sept. 11 and the subsequent anthrax scare.
Equally blind-sided by the news were Hunt's twin brother Frank and his mother, Naomi McCloskey, according to several family acquaintances. Neither was available for comment yesterday.
Hunt's path from Vernon to online hate sites to San Francisco remained largely unknown yesterday. Acquaintances believed he had attended at least two colleges since graduating, but it was unclear whether he had received a degree.
Hunt's father, Frank Hunt of Archbald, Pa., told the San Francisco Chronicle that he hadn't seen his son in 11 years, but received a call from him on Feb. 9. Eric asked his father to pick him up at the bus station from nearby Scranton, Pa.
Frank Hunt described Eric as disheveled and distracted during the two days he stayed with him. He told the Chronicle he eventually drove Eric back to Sussex County and dropped him off five miles away from "an uncle's house," with Eric saying he would walk the rest of the way. The weather was below freezing.
"It just seemed to me that there was something deep, deep, deep going on," he said.
Forrest, the Somerset prosecutor, said he did not know how long Hunt had been enrolled at the drug and alcohol rehab clinic.
Last week, Wiesel, who was uninjured in the confrontation with Hunt, told the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera that the attack had more than just terrified him. It also represented an alarming escalation in the rise of Holocaust denial around the world, he said.
"I feared for my life in a way that hadn't happened to me since 1945, before the end of the war," said Weisel, who won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1986.
"Every time I make a speech somewhere in the world there is a group of deniers in that place waiting for me," he said. "Until today they used words; now they have switched to violence."

  24. Katie,

It wasn't the real Eric Hunt unless he had internet access from the psych ward he was at when he was arrested.

    Chris,

Just curious, do you believe that it was okay for FBI informant David Gletty to turn over two drug users and robbery suspects over the the FBI who were non-NSM members? I don't see where you would have a problem with this.

    Everyone,
One thing that is interesting is Bill White apparently tried to help out the FBI in arresting Eric Hunt by posting his address on his website (although the FBI is 10 stages above Bill White doing a google search on "eric hunt" + New jersey)

Also the FBI is claiming they had no role in organizing the NSM march in Orlando. I believe them. In fact, it would look really suspicious if David Gletty had suddenly pulled out of the rally. I'm sure Gletty wasn't the only fBI informant within the NSM there. All organizations are full of informants.

  26. Chris, it is no seceret that drugs and alcohol among white nationalists and neo-Nazi's is a major problem. When David Duke came out of prison he let it be known that he had a habit and that he had actually been dealing inside. That sparked some research into drugs within the movement.

Now, I don't know about Martin and Rock - like you, there just hasn't been enough information about precisely what they were doing. But, wouldn't you agree that drug usage and alcoholism is a problem for many of you guys?

What is the answer? Why do you believe it is so prevalent?

    ReplyDelete
  27. My opinion is the majority of those calling themselves white nationalist these days are

    a) mentally ill
    b) drug addicts
    c) common criminals.

It has to frustrate the living hell out of those who are not one of the above but calls themselves WN.

The question Chris Drake and others who call themselves WN is how come WN is such a draw among the elements I just listed above. And why there isn't a single WN gang/organization that weeds them out.

The only place I know of where WN is actually a force is within the United States prison system.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Excellent observations and question Harry.

    Chris says:
I've been around. There's more drugs in the parking lot outside a college football game than I've seen in the movement total. I think its probably less than per-capita average (how many people in the USA versus how many use drugs versus how many are "in" the movement). The reason being is that even if you agree with drugs somehow, you hopefully have enough since to realize that the cops are paying more attention to you than they would normal people.

Well Chris, I have to disagree on the "sense" part. Your guys keep getting busted, and busted, and busted over stupid stuff. I think some of the older more "polished" guys are aware of the fact that the scrutiny level of law-enforcement on them is a lot higher. But, I really don't believe that the younger players have a clue - or care for that matter.

And...as I have been around also...I would love to see some sort of statistics - because I believe the number of drug users in the movement is far greater than in the mainstream - especially when it comes to the hard-core drugs.

And shall we talk about the drugs in the antifa scene. Jesus-Christ--being addicted to something is the norm, not the exception

Actually no. The questions dealt with those in the hate movement. Just once, I would like to have a discussion that stayed on track. I WOULD discuss this with you in another thread, though.

Trying to paint the movement with the druggie brush is a go-nowhere activity. Duke is another story though, but fortunately, he doesn't want any more to do with the movement than we want to do with him. As far as him selling drugs on the inside--why not just say he was killing jews on the inside? So in other words, he did it, you knew about it, the cops didn't and he got away with it? Did I follow that right?

It wasn't until he got out that his addiction came out in a very candid - ahem, rather skewed - article. And, actually I was curious to see what your response would be to anything about David Duke. Would that also be your take on Don Black?

Alcohol is a different story. A lot of guys drink. However, I don't think this is a movement problem as much as its just a working-class problem. Remember that most of these guys are who the antifa pretend to be, most coming from six digit a year households. What is kind of strange is the big gap between people who drink pretty much all the time and folks who don't drink at all. I probably know just as many teatotalers as I do drinkers and 2 or 3 throw-down drunks. The drunks can't be depended on so you never hear about them long.

Generally speaking, most of the problems that are reported between members of various groups seem to be alcohol related. Also, within the NSM, I happen to KNOW that alcohol and drugs, to a lesser degree, are major problems right now.

If you examine the anti-white crowd, you'd find that we look like a bunch of boyscouts when it comes to "partying." The problem is that when one of our guys gets popped, its all over the papers and the internet that someone who commits thought-crimes, though not technically illegal yet, also commits actual crimes. When a member of an anti-white gang or organization as you put it, commits a crime, its just him or her by themselves. The papers never read, "Anti-white gang member busted" and for obvious reasons. As long as you stay in the jew's backpocket, bad press is the last thing you have to worry about. Making bail is another.

First, let me make a couple of points here. You guys seem to have fallen into a very bad habit of referring to everyone who does not accept your ideology or share your beliefs as "anti-white." That is more than just a little misnomer. I'm a white woman and am anti-racist. That does not translate to "anti-white." I realize that it is a little mind-game that you guys like to play, but it really is a bit silly.

Additionally, as an anti-racist, I do not belong to any "gang." I don't know of any "gang" affiliations associated with Citizens Against Hate, and I can assure you that no law-enforcement group has ever singled us out as a "gang" unlike many of the groups on your side of the ideological spectrum.

Lastly, the last time I looked I didn't reside in anyone's "back pocket." Those who work at CAH and who affiliate themselves with us are very much "free agents." No one pulls our strings and we answer to no "masters."

To attempt to claim that the people within the hate movement are innocents without problems is, in my opinion, disingenuous on your part. The drug use, alcoholism, violence, criminality, and psychosis that is so prevalent within the movement is not only well-documented but is also a major concern to many within the rank and file.

You and I both know that for some reason the racist movement attracts more than its' share of fruits and nuts - AND these fruits and nuts are precisely the ones who will engage in the very actions that cause every one of you to cry, "oy vey! not again! why us!"

I tend to think that mentally ill people are attracted to that which will enable them to act out their sick thoughts. How about you?

    ReplyDelete
  29. Good discussion.

I'm not anti-white at all. I have no problem with white people organizing. I have no problem with white people proud of their European heritage. I have no problem with St. Patrick's parades, Octoberfest, Christmas or other European holidays & festivals.

Where I do have a problem is when People claim to be pro-white or pro-black but HATE/KILL others. I've heard the speeches at the WN rallies, it's all about hatred of jews, blacks, gays. People going Heil Hitler just to get knee jerk reactions. Nothing but bitching and complaining about others. Nothing positive, all negative.

I am not a fan of Farrakhan (especially Farrakhan), Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton because I think they alienate and divide. I do however think that Martin Luther King Jr was a great man with a good message.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I couldn't have said it better, Harry.

I have a problem with anyone who believes himself/herself superior to others simply because of their ethnicity or genetic traits.

  31. This Eric Hunt situation is a really good example of the hate movement and its' dysfunctional people.

Look at the discussion going on over at VNN. You have Bill White claiming that others should be willing to do similar things and that this is good for the movement.

You then have those who are embarrassed by what took place and claim that it is only a victory for ZOG.

Then you have those who say Hunt didn't go far enough - that he should have put him in an oven and turned the heat up until he was ready to retract his claims about the Holocaust. Or, they are saying that he should have killed Wiesel.

None of this is rational. None of this is normal.
None of this would ever be believed by mainstream America. Why? Because it is cro-magnon thinking!

Even those who are saying it doesn't help them, are saying that for all the wrong reasons. They are pissed because it helped "ZOG."
