Culture of Violence

As anticipated, I have immediately been labeled "anti-Christian" after posting the story below. This is pretty run-of-the-mill for any of us who publish things that go against the beliefs and ideologies of others - we expect such name-calling and finger pointing.

It's interesting to throw something like this first article out there and watch to see who will be the first one to make such an assertion. This is particularly true of white supremacists and right-wing Christian radicals. If you aren't buying into the white-supremacy notion of separation, bigotry, and genocide then you must be "anti-white" and doomed to be murdered and ravaged by an African-American. And if you fail to accept the dogma proffered by the dominionists or the literal interpretations of the far-right winged Christian Reconstructionists then you are "anti-Christian" and doomed to hell and damnation. There are no "gray areas" with these two myopic groups.

A Fredrick Clarkson article published over on the Daily Cos pretty well sums some of this up:

TO THE CLARKSON ARTICLE

It is this thought process which demonstrates the near-sightedness of such groups as well as their bigoted mindset.

TO THE SOURCE

By Michael Stone

Scott Roeder, Christian fundamentalist and right wing extremist, assassinated Dr George Tiller, a controversial figure and defender of a women's right to choose. Roeder is no doubt a disturbed individual, but this episode can not be written off as a lone gun man gone mad. Indeed, in many circles Roeder is already a hero, and if not a hero at least justified in his actions.

The depravity of anti-abortion extremists is nothing new. Bombings and shootings at clinics occur on a regular basis. Such episodes serve to punctuate a constant barrage of harassment and intimidation faced by patients and staff at women's clinics across the country. There can be no doubt that such extremists encouraged the assassination of the doctor, and those same extremists will attempt to minimize or even justify the crime.

To be sure mainstream anti-abortion groups, after threatening and harassing the good doctor for decades, now offer a tepid condemnation of the assassination. Yet if one listens and looks one finds quiet signs of approval, exclamations that while the killing was wrong, Dr. Tiller deserved to die. Randall Terry, a veteran anti-abortion activist whose protests have often targeted Tiller, said this: "George Tiller was a mass murderer and we cannot stop saying that. He was an evil man — his hands were covered with blood."

Bill O'Reilly, obnoxious on purpose pundit for Fox news, is also indirectly responsible for Tiller´s assassination. O'Reilly ran the headline "Tiller the baby killer" on his show 23 times. Tiller was a constant target of the FOX bully.

O'Reilly, like Rush Limbaugh or Sean Hannity, represent the ignorant and highly superstitious of our country. They appeal directly to the Christian fundamentalist and right wing extremist. By invoking a belief in the supernatural and the Law of God as preempting all other natural laws, they set the stage for domestic terrorism. These right wing extremists, these Christian fundamentalists, are cut from the same cloth as the terrorists who flew planes into buildings on 9/11.

George Tiller’s death is the culmination of years of culture war propaganda, fear tactics, and Christianity gone bad. The terrorist threat posed by religious right extremists is real. A domestic terrorism report released by the Department of Homeland Security indicated, among other things, that radicals might use abortion as a justification for committing acts of domestic terrorism. Lost amid the concern about foreign terrorism is the very real presence of homegrown right-wing terrorism in our own backyard. The radical right and Christian fundamentalists must be confronted; they are a cancer on our society.

  1. Wow, now Nikki is on the anti-Christian-label-them-all- terrorist bandwagon.

  2. Please read what Clarkson has to say, here:

TO THE CLARKSON ARTICLEI am neither anti-Christian or anti-white. I AM, however, anti-extremist.

  3. The title of the article says it all and you are painting with a very WIDE brush.

The Christian religion IS NOT a culture of violence. Talk about individuals and stop trying to paint Christians as radical extremist.

  4. Who woulda thunk it that the Christains are getting the "Nazi treatment" here at the ol' nest, eh? LOL

Keep up the good work, Nikki, it's idiots like you that will send the Christians right into the extremist camp right along with the real extremist.

  5. Nikki, if you are against extremism then you would have been against the past-colonists dumping the Tea in Boston Harbor.

  6. Give it up people - I didn't write the article. But, I do love how you guys want so much to paint everyone who disagrees with you as anti-white and anti-Christian.

You're right - not all Christians are extremists or violent. I should know. But those who reside on the radical right are extremists and they do spawn violence.

Incidently, I don't believe in abortion either - except in very extreme cases. I also don't believe that Tiller should have been assassinated. How about you?

  7. I didn't say a thing about "anti-white". Not a thing.

However, I am concerned about well intentioned idiots lumping real Christians in with radical extremist.

  8. First, would you tell me what you believe a "real Christian" to be. And are you saying that people like Randall Terry or Christian Fundamentalists are not "real Christians?"

  9. Someone that murders someone else goes against the tenets of the Christian faith. Randal Terry probably isn't a Christian.

So, from where I sit neither the shooter or the guy that was murdered were Christians.

What get my dander up is how people like you want to accuse and point the finger...trying to lame the blame of "rhetoric" or various personalities on the radio. Let's get something straight here: This is AMERICA and we do have freedom of speech.

I am tired of people saying folks speech should be curtailed because some nutcase may go off hearing it...YOU cannot be held responsible for someone that is mentally ill going off...you just can't.

If you want someone to blame, then blame Jimmy Carter for deinstitutionalization policies that emptied many state mental institutions.

Nikki, it is become VERY apparent what side you are on, and it doesn't appear to be freedom.

    Again, this is America...ACT ACCORDINGLY.

  10. Someone that murders someone else goes against the tenets of the Christian faith. Randal Terry probably isn't a Christian.

[[Randall Terry would argue that with you.]]

So, from where I sit neither the shooter or the guy that was murdered were Christians.

[[And, I would agree with that. But, from where I sit, these people claim to be devout Christians. They use the Bible as a weapon and they spew venom against anyone who disagrees with them. It is these types of self-proclaimed Christians who you should be pissed at.]]

What get my dander up is how people like you want to accuse and point the finger...trying to lame the blame of "rhetoric" or various personalities on the radio. Let's get something straight here: This is AMERICA and we do have freedom of speech.

[[And thank God for that. However, "people like me" enjoy that same right. And, with that right comes responsibility - as in responsible behavior.]]

I am tired of people saying folks speech should be curtailed because some nutcase may go off hearing it...YOU cannot be held responsible for someone that is mentally ill going off...you just can't.

[[I would agree to a point. However, when you put yourself into a position of influence over others (and make no mistake, that's precisely what it is all about) you have to remember that there are those out there who are unbalanced...who may act on what you are suggesting. While you might not be responsible for their actions, you ARE responsible as a human being to everyone you might influence. It's called character and integrity and respect.]]

If you want someone to blame, then blame Jimmy Carter for deinstitutionalization policies that emptied many state mental institutions.

[[Now, this is just a ridiculous statement. Sorry, but you will have to elaborate on this.]]

Nikki, it is become VERY apparent what side you are on, and it doesn't appear to be freedom.

    Again, this is America...ACT ACCORDINGLY.

[[You are really pretty funny. I guess I am some sort of bad person because I value the right of others not to have to be afraid that some right-wing fanatic is going to kill them as they attend Sunday services.]]

Look - maybe we SHOULD get something straight. I'm not attacking Christians, Jews, Muslims, Atheists or agnostics. What I AM attacking, and will continue to attack are the far-right extremists who think that not agreeing with them or not adhering to their bullshit dogma gives them some sort of God message that you are worthy of death.

I'm attacking those who are so myopic and so intolerant that they believe themselves to be superior in all ways to everyone else - the would-be power-brokers of the far right.

I really don't care what religion you are. I really don't care what race you are. I really don't care if you are liberal, conservative, moderate, or apolitical. When the exercising of your rights interfere with the exercising of my rights - we have a problem. Personally, I am sick to death of people screaming about freedom of speech every time they get criticized.

No one says you can't speak - hell you're doing a pretty good job of it right here. And...pay attention now...to the best of my recollection, I have never said anyone should be killed for exercising that right.

Dr. George Tiller performed abortions - he performed long-term abortions. I am very opposed to much of what he did. I find the whole idea loathesome. Did he deserve to die? I don't know. I am not God. And neither is the man who killed him. Guess what - neither are ANY of these wacked-out nutjobs who claim to be carrying out God's will. It's bullshit.

A Christian is someone who accepts Jesus Christ as their savior and follows his teachings. These people are no more Christian than Osama Bin Laden - and when they act on their so-called "calling" - they are no less than terrorists.

Now...if you disagree with that - then come on back and make some damned sense out of this fundamentalist extreme bullshit. And ya gonna have to do a whole lot better than that lame-ass Jimmy Carter crap.

  11. """If you aren't buying into the white-supremacy notion of separation, bigotry, and genocide then you must be "anti-white" and doomed to be murdered and ravaged by an African-American."""

Wrong, If you position every single story you do on the oppression of the Poor negro and not a single word about reverse racism, as bad as it is; than you position yourself as being "anti-white". Someone who defends white where it is due and defends afros where it is due would not be considered "anti-white" in anyone's book that I know.

    """I am neither anti-Christian or anti-white. I AM, however, anti-extremist."""

Wrong again Nikki. You are a radical leftist so how could you be anti-extremist when you are an extremist? I admit that you aren't quite as radical as some of the libs here but you definitely fall into the category of being a fringe extremist. I see your politics in line with Kieth Oberman and you don't get too much further left than him. Obama MIGHT beat him but that's a bit MIGHT.

"""I also don't believe that Tiller should have been assassinated. How about you?"""

You are asking a ridiculous question. Do you actually think that conservatives feel that he should be dead and agree with the madman who killed him? Come on Nikki, we are trying to have a serious discussion here. I think you already know the answer to this question.

  12. I noticed that in the same time frame an Islamist shoots up a recruiting office.

Do we hear a peep from Ms. Nikki on this? No, because her brand of anti-racism is tailored towards the white variety, which in my mind makes her a damned hypocrite.

Yes, I am the Jimmy Carter guy...I didn't call you anti-white, but I can understand why guys like Hooch would call you one.

  13. I start seeing red when I see anyone suggesting that there should be further restrictions on our 1st Amendment rights under our Constitution. Believe me when this nation was founded political speech was much more rancorous and dirty than today. Oh, how times have changed.

Using Niks logic one could say organizations like “Code Pink” and various other Leftist “rhetoric” influenced Abdul Hakim Mujahid Muhammad when shot several soldiers--killing one of them.

I don’t recall reading or hearing anywhere on the right arguing that anyone’s speech should be curtailed, because of this situation.

As long as someone isn’t directly threatening an individual or instructing an individual to do someone else harm—then it is PROTECTED speech. The 1st Amendment wasn’t drawn up to protect civil speech—it was created (well, we always had it since it is a God-given right) to protect unpopular speech.
